We get asked this all the time and depending on your industry the answers will vary. The most important thing to remember about website content is that is should accurately reflect your business and your marketing message.
There are some obvious answers, for example if you have an online store, your products should all be available with good descriptions of what is being bought. If you offer a service, make sure each service is listed with relevant information about that service. There is more than just looking at your business and making sure you have all your products/services on your website.
Your website should be designed with your potential clients in mind, what information do they need and how will they use your website? Your home page is the front door and from there they should be able to easily find any information needed to do business with you.
Let’s start with the basics that should be on every website:
- Business name and logo
- Address if potential clients may visit your physical location
- Hours of operation
- Contact information – phone, email and a contact form
If you are on social media, include those feeds. There are many options for displaying your social media feeds on your website. Talk to your webmaster about options available including allowing interaction with your social media pages from your website.
Industry Specific Needs
Depending on your industry and your goals for your website the rest of your website content will be more customized.
For a service types of business you want to talk about all the services you offer. You should have a service page that lists the services you provide. Describe why the services is needed, what is included and how your client will benefit from the service.
If you have products you are selling either online or in store only, show those products with pictures and descriptions. Include price and whether available for purchase online or in store only.
Your food industry website should offer a menu on your website. If you offer daily or weekly specials have an area on the home page that can be easily updated.
Unique Needs
In the last few months we have seen how quickly your business message can change. You need a way to communicate those changes just as quickly. A lot of businesses used their social media pages to keep their customers up to date to what was going on. Social media is a great way to reach those that choose to follow you on social media. How do you reach those that are new customers or are not on social media?
The internet, your website should be the only place your customers need to look. Having your website current is vital as things change. Making sure your website provides necessary information will help reduce the number of phone inquiries for details. Changed hours, delivery, curbside, phone orders, etc., all need to be communicated quickly and clearly.
Here at Pro Web Marketing, we did COVID related changes for our clients at no charge, your company may charge. Understanding the costs ahead time can help you prepare for setting up your site for future unforeseen changes. A What’s New section on your home page gives you a place to communicate changes, specials, etc. Ask your web designer if they can create a simple news section and show you how to update it. You will be able to make changes daily without charge or delays.
Another great tool to use when you need to update your hours or get the word out quickly is your Google Business Listing. If you haven’t claimed it, you should. This will not only help your SEO, but gives you another platform to communicate changes. Your webmaster should be able to help you claim it and set it up if needed.
Does your website answer your potential customers questions?
Something we stress with our clients is that a website should answer all common questions that potential customers may have. If you find yourself fielding the same questions repeatedly you can save time for everyone if those answers are on your website. Think of what your customers need to know to decide if they want to do business with you and answer that. Many of our clients use a FAQ (frequently asked questions) page. Here you can answer any question that is relevant for your business, it is also a good idea to include this information on appropriate pages if possible.
A good website should be easy to navigate and not leave your potential customers closing it out in frustration and going to your competitor’s website. Keep them on your site and provide them with the information needed to feel confident in doing business with you.
